What’s a Vigorous Baby?

Ever heard the term "vigorous baby"? It’s something doctors and nurses use to describe a healthy newborn. But what does it really mean?

dr. Vinny Yoanna, Sp.A, a pediatric specialist at RSAB Harapan Kita, explains that a vigorous baby is one in great shape right after birth. This is checked using something called the Apgar score.

The Apgar score is a quick test done right after birth to check how the baby’s doing. It looks at things like:

  • Breathing: : Is the baby crying loudly and regularly?
  • Heart Rate: Is the heartbeat strong and steady? Is the heartbeat strong and steady?
  • Muscle tone: Is the baby moving around and crying?
  • Reflexes: Does the baby have normal reflexes, like coughing or swallowing?
  • Skin color: Is the baby’s skin nice and pink?

If everything looks good, the baby gets a perfect Apgar score of 10, meaning they’re in great shape. This score is super important because it helps doctors:

  • Check the baby’s condition fast: They can quickly see if the baby needs extra help.
  • Keep an eye on the baby’s progress: They can do the test again a few minutes later to see how the baby’s doing.
  • Let parents know how their baby’s doing: Parents can get a clear picture of their baby’s health.

"Sometimes, a baby might be breathing but struggling a bit, so their score won’t be perfect. Or they might have weak muscle tone. These babies might not be considered vigorous. But if a baby is vigorous and stays that way, they’ll likely grow up healthy. A healthy baby is usually vigorous right from the start," says Dr. Vinny.

Newborns Who Need to Stay in the Hospital

When a baby is born, the medical team checks right away to make sure they’re breathing well. One way they do this is by getting the baby to cry—it’s a good sign that their lungs are working.

Dr. Vinny adds that if the baby still has trouble breathing after some stimulation, they might need extra oxygen or even a ventilator. In cases like this, the baby will usually be taken to the NICU. The NICU is a special room with high-tech equipment to care for newborns who need extra help.

"If by the fifth minute, the baby’s still struggling even after stimulation, we might need to give oxygen or other support. That’s when the baby needs to go to the NICU," explains Dr. Vinny.

What’s the Difference Between Regular Care and NICU?

Dr. Vinny says there’s a big difference between regular hospital care and the NICU. It mostly comes down to how serious the baby’s condition is and what kind of care they need.

Regular Hospital Care (Level 1-2)

  • Baby’s condition: The baby’s doing okay and only needs basic care.
  • Location: The baby stays in the same room as the mom.
  • Care provided: Things like:
    • Light therapy (for jaundice)
    • Antibiotics (for infections)
    • Keeping blood sugar levels stable
  • Goal: To make sure the baby’s eating well, growing, and staying healthy.

NICU (Level 3-4)

  • Baby’s condition: The baby’s in serious condition and needs a lot of attention.
  • Location: The baby’s in a special room with advanced medical equipment.
  • Care provided: Things like:
    • Pemberian oksigen atau ventilator
    • Monitoring kondisi bayi secara terus-menerus
    • Tindakan medis yang kompleks, termasuk operasi
  • Goal: To stabilize the baby, help their organs work properly, and give them the best chance to thrive.

Bayi Baru Lahir Kelainan Bawaan Beresiko Tinggi Membutuhkan NICU

Not all newborns need the NICU, but those born with serious birth defects often do. Birth defects are health problems that start before the baby’s born and can affect organs like the heart, kidneys, or brain.

These babies need special, intensive care to help them survive and live a good life. The NICU is set up to give them the best possible care with all the latest medical tools.
